A Tribute to Ruthe Winegarten
by
Debra L. Winegarten
Meet
Ruthe Winegarten, as told through the letters of 140 of her closest friends,
colleagues, and acquaintances. Winegarten, often referred to as one of
the "Mothers of Texas Women's History," has spent the last 25 years of
her life researching, writing, and publishing the lives and times of Texas
women.
Combing through attics, basements, dusty boxes, and museum archives, Ruthe
Winegarten has brought back to life these extraordinary women. Now, it's
time for Ruthe to have her own spotlight.
Debra Winegarten, her younger daughter, contacted almost all the people
in Ruthe's three Rolodexes, inviting them to submit a story, vignette,
or photograph that exemplifies Ruthe. Gathered here, you will find stories
of courage, persistence, stick-to-it-ness, and fortitude that Ruthe personifies
in her quest to give voices to the forgotten.
This
labor of love came about because Debra thought it would be more fun for
Ruthe to be acknowledged while she was still around to hear the difference
she has made in so many peoples' lives.
